The Glenburn Darjeeling First Flush FTGFOP1 may well be the best First Flush we have ever had. Together with our Glenburn Assam Golden Tips, it is one of the main reasons Friends of Tea exists: it was at Glenburn, while shooting a video, that we came up with the idea of bringing high-quality teas straight to you – no detours and no middlemen.
Taste
The Glenburn Darjeeling has the typical light and floral Darjeeling taste. When we close our eyes, we feel transported straight back to the old colonial era, surrounded by tea bushes in the Indian highlands. Freshly brewed, the tea tastes fruity, light and refreshing. As it cools down a little, mild citrus notes come to the fore. The cup color is a delicate yellow-orange.
Origin
This tea comes from the Glenburn Tea Estate in the Darjeeling region. The estate is family-owned.
-
Origin: Darjeeling, India
-
Tea garden: Glenburn Tea Estate
-
Harvest: First Flush
-
Caffeine: high
Preparation
Like most black teas, brew the Darjeeling First Flush with water at 100 °C and let it steep for 2 minutes. Warm up your cup and teapot beforehand so the tea doesn’t cool down too quickly.
What does FTGFOP1 actually mean?
FOP1 stands for the care taken when plucking: only the buds with the top two tender leaves are picked, while coarser leaves of lower quality stay on the bush. In Darjeeling, the number one is awarded to leaves of the highest grade. FTG, short for “Finest Tippy Golden”, means that the tea contains many fine, light-colored tips. The tips are lighter because they contain less cell sap. So with an FTGFOP1 tea, you get one of the highest-quality Darjeeling teas made from the best leaves.
Video
In 2016, we had the chance to be part of the shoot for an image video for the Glenburn Tea Estate. Since then, we have had a great relationship with this tea garden and keep sourcing high-quality teas from there.
